Host Brad Kearns welcomes Dave McKeown to discuss the subject of leadership with a fresh and extremely compelling twist. If you are a leader in the workplace or even a household, these insights will be very helpful and memorable. Dave is the author of the book, The Self-Evolved Leader: Elevate Your Focus And Develop Your People In A World That Refuses To Slow Down

You'll learn to evolve from our typical approach to "heroic leadership" to become a self-evolved leader, where you focus on helping each member of the team become the best version of themselves--including you in the leadership position. These concepts are especially important today when leaders have more potential than ever for distraction, reduced focus on big picture goals, and easy access to data to micromanage and become frazzled. To learn more about Dave, visit DaveMcKeown.com

This book is ideal for any leader looking to:
  • Stop working in the weeds and think more strategically
  • Build empowerment deep in their team
  • Free up their headspace to be more creative

Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way.

After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme

Host Brad Kearns talks to Joe Cohen, the founder of SelfDecode, a genetic testing service that gives customers personalized health recommendations based on their genes. Great advancements have been made with genetic testing in recent years, and running your genetic profile once allows you to apply future research advancements to your unchanging genetic profile and learn further insights.

Joe describes how genetic testing can help you make the best decisions for exercise, eating, mood stability, and sleeping habits. It's important to acknowledge that self optimization should always be centered on testing, evaluating, and retesting, but knowing what direction to head with a genetic road map can be extremely valuable. For example, athletes can learn valuable insights about the antioxidant needs, methylation abilities, and muscle fiber composition to help design a training plan that they will respond to successfully. For example, Brad mentions his DNAFit report that revealed a ratio of 54% strength/power to 46% endurance in his genotype, a revelatory insight that would have helped revise his triathlon training away from a pure endurance approach that most triathletes follow to something more suited to his genetics.

Host Brad Kearns welcomes Dr. Greg Kelly, a naturopathic doctor, and expert in nutrition and anti-aging.

Dr. Greg is the founder of Neurohacker Collective. In this episode, you'll learn about some cutting-edge longevity research to target senescent cells and help repair them before they become cancerous. Supplements like the popular anti-inflammatory quercetin and mushroom extracts have been proven effective, as has daily time-restricted feeding and occasional longer fasting periods. Dr. Kelly also discusses how important circadian rhythm is to health and longevity, and some ideas for how to optimize the various hormonal and metabolic functions that are tied to circadian rhythm. Hint: Don't eat after 10 pm, because your stomach starts to produce high levels of acid to detoxify what is supposed to be an empty stomach. Regarding weight loss, Dr. Kelly provides a memorable insight about crash dieting, where the body reacts with a "body fat overshoot" aka "diet-induced lipolysis" to gain weight back quickly and often worse than where you started. Dr. Greg offers some great practical tips to spur fat loss the right way, such as increased daily movement and better sleep. Another cool tip is to track morning and evening body temperature, as Dr. Kelly notes that more variation in daily temperature is a sign of youthful functional age. Regarding the plant foods that we have long been told to make a dietary centerpiece, Dr. Paul proposes that the natural toxins contained in all plants may be compromising your health without you knowing it. If you have any form of nagging autoimmune or inflammatory conditions that aren’t responding to traditional treatment, consider a test period of exclusion of all plant foods to give your digestive system and potential leaky gut condition and chance to heal. Host Brad Kearns welcomes Primal Health Coach Ryan Baxter to the show to discuss the importance of intentional breathing as it relates to minimizing workout (and life) stress and optimizing fat burning. Ryan discusses the important role breathing plays in whether we burn carbs or fat during aerobic workouts.

Beyond the need to observe the “180 minus age” in heartbeats per minute, the efficiency of our delivery of oxygen to working muscles is also relevant. Ryan explains how improving our CO2 tolerance can improve oxygen delivery, making workouts less stressful and improving performance. The less CO2 you can tolerate the quicker you are going to want to exhale it from your body—that’s why we default to shallow, panting, inefficient breaths - not only during workouts but also at rest.

This stimulates sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system function while nose breathing stimulates parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system function. The greater you can tolerate C02 the slower you will be able to exhale it. You’ll learn how to dabble in the popular practice of nose breathing both at rest and during workouts. Try the shiftadapt test (linked below) to see how well you tolerate CO2 now and track improvement over time.

The long-awaited release of the diet book to end all diet books is here! Two Meals A Day transcends the confusion and controversy about healthy eating and obsessing over strict food choices and meal patterns required with many niche strategies. Instead, you’ll broaden the focus to a simple and sustainable strategy that works for everyone. Emerging science reveals that when you eat is just as important as what you eat for fat loss, disease protection, and longevity. Even among those devoted to choosing the best foods or following strict macro guidelines, it’s possible to fall short of fat loss goals by eating too frequently and engaging in the surprisingly destructive habit of snacking.

In this show, you’ll get a great sense of the content of each chapter in the book, starting with a detailed explanation of how to achieve metabolic flexibility—the ability to gracefully burn a variety of fuel sources as needed, with the emphasis on stored body fat as your preferred fuel choice. You’ll understand that our body works most efficiently in a fasted state, with autophagy, immune function, cognitive function, and inflammation control all optimized. You’ll also learn why simply ditching the Big Three toxic modern foods (refined sugars, grains, and industrial seed oils) will get you most of the way toward your potential. You’ll learn how to make the best choices in the ancestral food categories, and form an empowering mindset by rejecting self-limiting beliefs and behavior patterns and operating from a stance of gratitude, mindfulness, and self-confidence. The show will overview how to implement the important lifestyle practices of sleep, rest & recovery, increased general everyday movement, and brief, high-intensity workouts.

Elle Russ chats with GS Youngblood - the author of "The Masculine in Relationship".  He coaches men in relationships on how to live, love, and lead from their Masculine core. He specializes in “nice guys” who are with strong women. His teachings combine deep embodiment work with the framework of the Masculine blueprint from his book. Learn more at gsyoungblood.com.

Reception to the book has been phenomenal. Both from men (“You just described my married life to perfection…” and “This is the best book I’ve EVER read on masculinity in a relationship”) and women (“I just picked up your book off my coffee table that my husband bought and it’s like you’ve been listening to me talk for the last few years! Insane how much you get it.”)

His writings are filtered through the laboratory of his and his clients’ real-world, long term relationships (including the successes and spectacular failures) to see what actually works and what doesn’t. Through this lens of Masculine leadership, he also pulls in principles from a variety of fields: psychology, martial arts, tango, meditation, and BDSM.

Host Brad Kearns welcomes the dynamic duo of Dr. Ron Sinha and Dr. Phil Maffetone in a show representing the confluence of Dr. Sinha trying to prevent and cure metabolic disease amongst his high-tech Silicon Valley workers and Dr. Maffetone's great work in the area of fat-adapted aerobic conditioning. The key takeaway point is that almost all exercisers, from novices with metabolic syndrome to elite performers, will do better by slowing down and emphasizing aerobic development. This is the case even if you like high intensity workouts, because aerobic conditioning establishes a fitness base that supports performance at all higher intensities.

You'll also learn how to strategically integrate resistance exercise and explosive sprints into your schedule without suffering from the common afflictions of breakdown and burnout. These two experts are true leaders in what Dr. Maffetone calls the "global overfat pandemic." The solution starts with getting out and walking every day while cutting out nutrient-deficient, high insulin-stimulating carbohydrates. Time to burn fat! Host Brad Kearns catches up with New York Chiropractor and Functional Physician Dr. Robert Silverman, author of the upcoming book, "The Superhighway To Health." Dr Robert is the stat king, firing off a number of interesting and memorable stats about Covid-19 immune response and risk factors, ketogenic eating patterns, and the inner-workings of the gut microbiome and the gut-brain connection. Covid-19 symptoms take 5 days to appear, 35% of people have no symptoms, one type of antibody kicks in around day 7, another around day 14. You excrete the virus in stool after 28 days. Diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity are major co-morbidity factors, and the vast majority of Covid-19 victims present with co-morbidity factors.

Covid-19 has exposed America as an unhealthy nation, with 75% of citizens classified as overweight or obese and only 12% considered entirely metabolically healthy. Eighty percent of our immune response is in the gut, 93 percent of serotonin is made in the gut. Sugar is the big enemy here, as it inflames the delicate gut lining and promotes leaky gut syndrome. The strong connection between gut and brain (the Vagas nerve connects the two so they are in constant communication.) means that leaky gut can be a major risk factor for the diseases of cognitive decline that are so prevalent. Host Brad Kearns welcomes popular guest Dude Spellings from his base in the cool headquarters of the world, Austin, TX. Dude has used the quarantine to implement an extremely successful micro-workout program at home where he takes a break every hour to perform a few minutes of bodyweight exercises. The show covers the emerging fitness revolution of kinder, gentler workouts that minimize muscle soreness, post-exercise fatigue and the high risk of burnout that comes from the traditional approach of doing epic workouts in high energy group settings.

The great work of Pavel Tsatsouline, Dr. Craig Marker, Dr. Phil Maffetone and MMA trainer Firas Zahabi is referenced. The priority seems to be switching from doing epic sessions at the gym that come with high risk of exhaustion to simply being more active in everyday life, and also finding ways to perform fitness activities "under the radar"--where they don't fatigue you but deliver an awesome cumulative fitness benefit. The rationale for this is even stronger when you consider the compensation theory insights that increased calorie burning during workouts does not lead to fat loss. Dude also talks about how to minimize blue light exposure in your home, especially in the evenings, so you can facilitate healthy melatonin production in the evening and a natural cortisol and serotonin boost in the morning.

Brian is a personal trainer and scratch golfer from Chicago who has had some great success with intermittent fasting for both himself and his clients. He was initially inspired when he became frustrated by his inability to achieve the same results in the gym at age 38 as he did at 28 - imagine that! He started with the simple strategy of pushing his breakfast back an hour at a time until he was able to comfortably adjust to eating his first meal at around noon. Consequently, Brian typically ends up eating only two meals a day. Brian and Brad discuss an assortment of common sense tips to make fasting work for you, in particular: Be strict with your exercise so you don’t have decision fatigue and will power needed every day to stick with your plan; move around and keep busy during your fasting periods to make time fly by faster; clean up your diet so you can minimize glucose spikes and insulin crashes; make sure your dietary practices are a smooth fit into your busy life.

Brian offers the memorable quote that muscles are made in the gym but that six-pack abs are made from diet. Another key benefit of adhering to some sort of fasting protocol is that you develop a greater appreciation for natural hunger and satiety sensations, and gain a greater sense of control in your life than when you have to rely on food for your energy, mood, and cognition. Enjoy numerous simple, common-sense insights that will get you psyched to try and succeed with Intermittent Fasting!

Elle Russ chats with Helen Marshall - a certified Primal Health Coach & founder of the grain free food range Primal Alternative.  Helen hosts the Primal Alternative Podcast on the Wellness Couch which is the number one ranked health and wellness podcast station in Australia.  She is a Motivational Speaker on grass roots community centric change, overcoming limiting beliefs and creating an exceptional life.

Faced with a health crisis which included chronic nausea, constipation, insomnia, physical pain, headaches, brain fog, depression, anxiety and phobias, Helen returned to a diet of plants and animals to reclaim her health.  She ditched grains, sugar and seed oils and embraced sunshine, sleep, nature and connection. Helen got certified as a Primal Health Coach to let other women know that they were not on their own on their health journey and that they too could reclaim their health and change their life just with some diet and lifestyle tweaks and community behind them. But she got kick back, Helen’s clients told her that going grain free was hard – they were time-poor and found themselves falling off the wagon.  People found it hard to go without pizza, bread, cookies and lolly pops. So Helen offered to create a range of Primal Alternatives to the foods people love to make going grain free easy.

Helen was told that her products were life changing and she felt compelled to get the range to the whole of Australia but the thought of factories didn’t light her up and besides – she didn’t have any capital. Helen was inspired to share her successful baking business so that other women with a passion for clean living could start their own home business, doing what they love and make a difference in their community. The Primalista Baking License launched on Boxing Day 2016 and to date over 100 incredible women have said yes to this opportunity.  Primal Alternative now has an online store and over 150 stockists across Australia. In 2017 Quirky Cooking collaborated with Primal Alternative to bring a ready made version of their Life Changing Dough to the community. In 2018 Primal Alternative collaborated with Chef Pete Evans to bring a lunch box friendly No Nut Hemp Bread and in 2019 the No Nut Hemp Wrap. Before ditching the rat race, was a Fitness Instructor and Personal trainer then a Business Manager for a leading recruitment company in the city.  Helen has worked with women all of her life listening to their desires around health, work and lifestyle and has combined those skills to bring her greatest contribution yet – the Primalista Baking License.

Helen lives on 100 acres of wilderness in Albany, Western Australia with her husband Mike and their children Sam & Milly. She likes pilates, massage, coffee with her bestie, sunbathing, meditation, walks in nature and champagne in the spa.

This show was syndicated on Connie's podcast called the Fit Farming Food Mom. Connie is a Certified Nutritionist, ISSA certified personal trainer, competitive bodybuilder, Dental Assistant, hobby farmer in Idaho and mother of two young kids. She does it all!! But she had to learn the hard way that pushing too hard in training leads to setbacks instead of success. Brad kicks off the show with a challenge statement to athletes listening: "What are you all about, what is your true purpose for pursuing your fitness goals?" If you are trying to burn off nervous energy, escape from other stresses in life, or feed your ego, it's better to acknowledge it than behave in a manner that's different than your stated goals. When you can be honest with yourself, and release the attachment of your self-esteem from the results of your endeavors, you open yourself up for personal growth and performance breakthroughs.

Dr. Michael Platt on Adrenalin Dominance

Host Brad Kearns talks to Dr. Michael Platt about the controversial and cutting edge subject of Adrenalin Dominance, the title of Platt’s new book and a topic that Platt argues is widely misunderstood and misinterpreted. Dr. Platt explains that the catch-all health disturbance of adrenal fatigue is diagnosed by low salivary cortisol, which is actually indicative of adrenalin dominance. Adrenalin Dominance, as you might guess, is driven by hectic, high-stress modern life and the desperate need for our brain to consume glucose around the clock. Whenever your brain detects the slightest drop in glucose supply (from an insulin rush after high carb meal, or after a strenuous workout, or after a hectic, high-stress day at work), your body will produce adrenalin (also referred to as norepinephrine) to keep you humming along.

We are going outside the boundaries of mainstream medicine to attack the cause of many mental and physical disorders. Dr. Platt makes a compelling case that dumping too much adrenalin into the bloodstream is the root cause of most psychiatric conditions and also the primary driver of excess body fat. This is because adrenalin levels peak at 2:30 am and all that glucose production isn’t burned off and is thus stored as fat while you sleep. Hint: if you get up to pee in the middle of the night, you have a problem. This seemingly innocent and common occurrence is actually a sign of excess adrenalin—remember your Latin lessons where “adrenal” means next to renal. Your overactive adrenalin stimulates the kidneys and you have to pee. Other symptoms include grinding your teeth and nervous tapping of your legs. The net effect of overproducing adrenalin is chronic conditions like ADHD, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, severe mood swings, and road rage.

Dr. Platt is not all about bad news. He says the condition is surprisingly easy to fix with the application of the wonder hormone progesterone. Yes, you can buy 5% progesterone cream and apply it before meals, which blocks both adrenalin, insulin, and estrogen. Note: while females may be familiar with using progesterone for estrogen-related health conditions, Dr. Platt notes that males over 50 stop producing progesterone, setting the stage for the dreaded space tire accumulation—a hallmark of which is excess estrogen.

Dr. Platt is board-certified in Internal Medicine and has nearly four decades of experience working with patients in varied clinical settings from medical groups to eldercare medicine to health research. He’s currently the president of Platt Wellness Center in Rancho Mirage, California, where he specializes in bio-identical hormones, hormone balancing and the causation of illness. Elle Russ chats with Courtney Contos, a chef, wellness expert, Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, and speaker. Courtney was raised and mentored in downtown Chicago under the expertise of her acclaimed restauranteur father, Bill Contos. He was the owner of Chez Paul - an ultra-elegant French restaurant and known in popular culture as the fancy restaurant from the iconic classic films Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Blue Brothers. Chez Paul is where her love of food and appreciation for quality was born.

Courtney carried on her father’s vision by working in restaurants and cooking schools until ultimately attaining my  degree in culinary arts from Kendall Culinary School in Chicago. I opened Chef Contos Kitchen & Store in Vermont, which was featured by Food & Wine Magazine as one of the best cooking schools in the world - focused on culinary education and chef-curated retail.

Amidst her successes, she struggled and suffered for 12 years with chronic pain due to a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Her rheumatologist declared on numerous occasions that her condition would never change and that she would be wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. Unwilling to accept this fate, she persevered to find a solution, and in 2018 - along with her Functional Medicine doctor, she set out to overcome her autoimmune disease. After decades of systemic inflammation, multiple health issues, surgeries, and over six years of severe foot pain, she now takes pain-free steps with immense gratitude for having zero RA markers. Boom!

Now Courtney supports others on through their life transformations in her virtual health consulting business. Having been so positively impacted by her healing journey - she merged her rich experience as a culinary leader and educator with overcoming autoimmune disease by becoming a certified Functional Medicine Wellness Coach. her mission is to help others transform their health by guiding people in the right direction when they find themselves stuck without wellness support.

Originally from Zanesville, Ohio, Dr. Riser began his work in alternative medicine through his award-winning Undergraduate Thesis study on Bacteriophage Therapy of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a preferred treatment method over traditional antibiotics.

While attending graduate school, Dr. Riser’s passion for alternative medicine developed after the passing of his grandmother, mother, and father in a two-year span.  He watched as conventional medicine treatment with drug therapy and a lack of nutritional guidance continued time and time again to fail his family members and ultimately led to untimely deaths.  It was at this time that he redirected his efforts toward Functional Medicine education.

In 2017, Dr. Riser founded Functional Health Center of the Carolinas, a highly regarded Functional Medicine clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has quickly become one of the most sought after “Chronic Disease Reversal” clinics in the region.

As the Clinic Director, the focus of Dr. Riser’s practice is primarily Functional Medicine treatment of Type II Diabetes, Thyroid Disorders, Cognitive Decline, and Autoimmune disease. Fasting is generally healthy when done properly. The same goes for exercise and carb restriction. These behaviors help many people; but they can also be unhealthy for certain people or when used too much or in the wrong circumstances.

Today I’d like to wade into potentially controversial waters and talk about when fasting potentially crosses the line into disordered eating territory.

A big problem with New Year’s resolutions is not something intrinsic to the practice of resolving to make positive changes in the coming year—these can be beneficial forces in a person’s life—but with the way we word our resolutions. Word choice determines everything. Words mean things. The words we use determine everything that follows. With just slight modifications to the wording and by being more specific, these resolutions can become more powerful, more effective, and more true to our nature and our actual desires.

How would I rewrite eight common New Year’s resolutions?

Mark Sisson and Brad Kearns discuss the long-awaited release of their new book, Keto For Life, a comprehensive owner's manual to pursue the ultimate goal of healthspan--living long and living awesome every step of the way. This discussion is also available in video format on YouTube. Enjoy a bit of everything in this free wheeling conversation. Mark reveals that he nearly refused the project since he was not walking his talk in his own life! And how focusing in on the book project helped him recalibrate and hone his most treasured skill of pivoting. Mark makes the assertion that longevity requires more than just dialing in diet, exercise, and sleep. You'll learn that Living Awesome encompasses the Four Pillars of Longevity detailed in the book: Metabolic Flexibility, Movement and Physical Fitness, Mental Flexibility, and Rest & Recovery. Mental Flexibility entails the ability to pivot in the face of life's challenges and changes, avoid the disease state of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), and prioritize meaningful interpersonal connections over hyperconnectivity. Learn why there are literally three relevant ages instead of just your chronological age, and why biological and psychological age are vastly more important than your calendar years. This is a great chance to connect with #listentothesisson as he walks you through his most comprehensive book to date! Visit KetoReset.com for details about the book and an incredible advance purchase bonus offer.

‘Tis the season for consumption.

Cookies, cakes, and pies abound. Feasts happen on a regular basis. Candy is given and received as gifts. And there are parties immeasurable—at work, with family, with friends—where calorie-dense, rewarding food is handed out, like, well, candy. The holiday season is a practice in overeating, and it can be very hard to avoid. You may not want to even avoid it; there’s something to be said for letting loose now and again on special occasions, especially when holiday cheer is in the air.

But what happens to your body when you overeat? And what can you do about it?
